About Saddle River, New Jersey
Saddle River is a borough of 3,372 people in Bergen County, about 25 miles northwest of Manhattan. European settlement here dates to 1675, when the Lenape sold Albert Zabriskie a strip beside the Saddle River.
The borough was carved out of Orvil Township during the wave of new boroughs that swept Bergen County in 1894, a year when the county formed 26 of them. Saddle River's voters approved a referendum on November 19, and three days later, on November 22, the New Jersey Legislature made it a borough. It grew in 1903, when it annexed another piece of Orvil Township.
- Named for its riverThe borough takes its name from the Saddle River, which runs through town and flows on into the Passaic. The river itself was named for a stream and valley at Saddell, in Argyll, Scotland.
- One day ahead of its neighborSaddle River's referendum passed on November 19, 1894, one day before voters next door approved the vote that created Upper Saddle River. The two boroughs still share a single zip code, 07458.
- Two-acre lots and no liquorEvery home in Saddle River must sit on at least 2 acres, a rule that has kept its fields, horse farms and woods. It is also a dry town, where no alcohol can be sold. In 1989 it was ranked the richest suburb in the country among places with 2,500 or more people, measured by income per person.
- A prize-winning bridge in 2024The Rindlaub Park Pedestrian Bridge was chosen as Municipal Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers in May 2024. The judges praised its design and the way it joined a piece of borough land that had been cut off to the park already there.
