About Pasadena, Texas

Pasadena is a city in southeastern Harris County, founded in 1893 by John H. Burnett and named for Pasadena, California, because of the area's vegetation. Farming, especially strawberries, shaped its early identity before ship-channel industry drove major growth beginning in the late 1930s. The 2020 census recorded 151,950 residents.

  • Strawberry RevivalAfter the 1900 Galveston hurricane, Clara Barton purchased 1.5 million strawberry plants for Gulf Coast farmers, helping Pasadena become the region's strawberry capital.
  • Independent SchoolsPasadena residents established an independent school system in 1899, the first in Harris County.
  • Final IncorporationResidents incorporated Pasadena in 1923, reversed that decision in 1924, and voted to incorporate again in 1928.
  • Industrial ShiftSinclair, Texaco, and Crown had built local refineries by 1920, though Pasadena's transition from farming to industry accelerated in the late 1930s.
