About Pastura, New Mexico

Pastura is a community of 17 people in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, about halfway between Santa Rosa and Vaughn on U.S. Route 54. It began in 1901 as a place where steam trains on the Southern Pacific stopped to take on water. The town grew fast enough that a post office opened here in 1903.

Pastura's fortunes changed with the roads and the engines. Route 66 was laid out 20 miles to the north and passed the town by. In the 1940s the railroad traded its steam locomotives for diesels, which had no need of a water stop. The town got smaller still, and today the land around it is farmed.

  • Built by a trading companyPastura's founders were men who worked for the railroad and for the Pastura Trading Co. The trading company belonged to the Charles Ilfeld Co. Together the two gave the new water stop its first residents in 1901.
  • A 142-mile wooden pipelineWater brought the railroad here, and the railroad worked hard to keep it flowing. In 1907 the Southern Pacific built a wooden pipeline that ran 142 miles from the Sierra Blanca range to Pastura.
  • Rudolfo Anaya's birthplaceRudolfo Anaya, the Chicano writer, came into the world here in 1937. In those years steam trains were still pulling into Pastura to take on water.
