About Puerto de Luna, New Mexico

The name Puerto de Luna means gateway of the moon. The town was founded in 1862. That winter, a committee of 13 men studied the site for settlement. After their good report, six families moved in. The following spring they built a dike across the Pecos River for irrigation, and farming began.

  • The town's years as county seatPuerto de Luna was once the seat of Guadalupe County. The railroad later made Santa Rosa far more important. After that, the county seat was moved to Santa Rosa.
