About Newkirk, New Mexico
Newkirk is a community of 8 people in Guadalupe County, at the spot where New Mexico State Road 129 meets Interstate 40. Historic U.S. Route 66 also runs through it, and the town grew up beside that road in the early 20th century.
The travelers on Route 66 kept Newkirk going, with places to eat, sleep and buy gas. Today it is considered a ghost town, but it still has a post office for ZIP Code 88431, and its children attend Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools.
- First called ConantThe town did not start out as Newkirk. When it was founded along Route 66 in the early 20th century, its name was Conant.
- Four gas stations in the 1930sDuring the 1930s, drivers on Route 66 could fill up at any of four gas stations in Newkirk. The town also had several restaurants and a set of cabins for overnight guests, along with De Baca's Trading Post.
- Whiting Brothers station 78By 1946 Newkirk had a Whiting Brothers station, number 78 in the chain. Travelers who stopped there could also eat at one of a pair of diners, rent one of the tourist cabins or shop at De Baca's Trading Post.
