About Pennside, Pennsylvania
Pennside is a community of 5,190 people in Berks County, lying in Lower Alsace and Exeter Townships about four miles east of Reading. Much of it was built on the grounds of Carsonia Park, an amusement park that John Rigg of the Union Traction Company opened in 1896 on William Schweitzer's 145 acre farm.
All summer, trolleys carried people out from the city for rides, band concerts and picnics, and the park grew into a popular resort that drew 250,000 visitors in the 1908 season. It covered the ground between Harvey, Parkview and Carsonia Avenues and ran past Byram Street into Exeter Township. Carsonia Park closed in 1951, and Byron Whitman, a local realtor, bought the land and built homes on it.
- Named for a financierThe park took its name from Robert N. Carson of Philadelphia, a financier who had money invested in the Union Traction Company of Reading. That trolley company built the park so its cars would have crowds to carry out of the city.
- Six holes of golf in 1897In 1897 Alexander Smith, John J. Kutz and a few friends got hold of golf clubs and balls and tried the game on six holes that John Reid, a professional from Atlantic City, laid out on the Carsonia grounds. Those first rounds were the start of the Berkshire Country Club.
- A Wright biplane in 1914On July 9, 1914, a huge crowd came to Carsonia Park to see a Wright biplane make two flights from the flat lawn by the lake. The plane headed straight for Mount Penn, cleared the top and went on toward Reading. To bring everyone out, the Reading Transit Company sent a car to the park every three minutes that afternoon and evening.
