About Pennville, Pennsylvania

Pennville is a community of 2,430 people in Penn Township, York County, right beside the borough of Hanover. The village dates to at least 1825, when blacksmith George Metzgar and his neighbor John Ohm appear to have been its first residents.

In the summer of 1863 the Civil War came straight down Pennville's road. On June 30 the cavalry fight at Hanover opened in the village itself, under a Union flag that had gone up on a tall pole a few weeks earlier.

  • A flag that kept flyingPennville raised a flag on a tall pole near the center of the village early in May 1863. On June 30 the Thirteenth Virginia cavalry struck the Eighteenth Pennsylvania Regiment as it rode through the village, opening the cavalry fight at Hanover. The Confederates never had a chance to pull the flag down, so it waved above them all afternoon. The following afternoon, part of the Fifth Army Corps pitched camp around the same pole.
  • A blacksmith shop by 1825George Metzgar was living at Pennville as early as 1825, with his blacksmith shop on the far side of the road from his house. John Ohm was his closest neighbor, and the 1907 History of York County names the two men as probably the village's first residents.
  • Growing beside HanoverThe census counted 1,947 people in Pennville in 2010 and 2,430 in 2020. The community covers 0.7 square miles of Penn Township, next to Hanover.
