About Peppertown, Indiana

Peppertown is an unincorporated village in the eastern part of Salt Creek Township, Franklin County. It grew up on the main road between Metamora and Oldenburg, and a 1915 county history placed it in the middle of a large and thrifty German farming settlement.

In August 1859 a surveyor named Fielding Berry laid out the village for John Koener, who owned the land. The new village took its name from August Pepper, a neighbor of Koener's who had made his home on the same ground in 1851.

  • Named for August PepperBefore he came to Franklin County, August Pepper had earned his living printing calico. After he settled on the future townsite in 1851, he and John Koener, the village's founder, kept a country store together, and the village laid out in 1859 carried Pepper's name.
  • A log church for twelve dollarsJohn S. Scott offered the Lutheran congregation a church lot for thirty-five dollars, but its members were too poor to pay that much. They later bought a different lot for twelve dollars and raised a log church on it, borrowing fifty dollars from German friends at Huntersville to complete the building. That log church served the congregation until 1875, when a brick church replaced it.
