About Perry, Iowa

Perry is a city of 7,836 people in Dallas County, on the North Raccoon River. John and Harvey Willis laid out the town on the railroad line in the winter of 1868 and the spring of 1869, and the town took its name from Col. Perry of Keokuk, one of the railroad's owners. Five acres went to the railroad company for a depot, along with thirty-two lots south of Willis Avenue.

D. J. Pattee, the first merchant, had opened a store a mile and a half west, and as soon as the town was located he moved his goods into a two-story frame building in Perry. The store burned on February 7, 1870. That year Perry had 301 people; it was incorporated on March 27, 1875, and by 1879 it had about 1,000, with Pattee as its mayor.

“Its location, about midway between the two great east and west lines of railroad to Chicago, and on the D. M. & Ft. D. R. R. connecting these two routes to the great market of the Northwest, gives warrant that the town of Perry is destined, at no very distant day in the future, to become a flourishing town of no small dimensions and importance, even to be numbered among the cities of the West.”

  • A steam flour millOtis & Selby Bros. built Perry's steam flour mill in the summer of 1875 for $12,000. It stood three stories high on a stone basement, 40 by 70 feet, with a fireproof engine room, and in the fall of 1878 the owners added another run of burrs for the new process of making flour. Its trade reached all along the Des Moines and Fort Dodge railroad.
