About Pierrepont, New York
Pierrepont is a town of 2,523 people in the middle of St. Lawrence County, southeast of Canton. It takes its name from Hezekiah Pierrepont, who once owned much of its land, and the name was long spelled Pierpont. The first settlers came around 1806, part of the wave of New England families who moved into upstate New York once the Revolutionary War was over.
The town was formed in 1818 from pieces of Russell and Potsdam. In the decades that followed, Pierrepont gave up land of its own to help create the towns of Fine in 1844, Clifton in 1868 and Clare in 1882.
- From Cox's Mill to Hannawa FallsThe hamlet in the eastern part of town went by Cox's Mill, East Pierrepont and Ellsworth before it became Hannawa Falls. Hannawa Pond, a reservoir on the Raquette River at its center, draws boaters and swimmers. The hamlet kept its own school until Potsdam absorbed it in the 1970s, and the Gardner Cox House there joined the National Register in 1986.
- Coney Island on the RaquetteA dead-end road in Hannawa Falls, right on the Raquette River, is called Coney Island. From the 1920s through the 1940s it was home to a small amusement park.
- Town hall and museumThe hamlet of Pierrepont, where NY-68 meets County Road 24, is home to the town hall, the town museum and Pierrepont's own fire department. The Pierrepont Town Buildings joined the National Register in 1982.
- The county's longest riverThe Raquette River runs through the northeast corner of town. No river in St. Lawrence County is longer, and only two in all of New York are. At Browns Bridge, with its dam and penstock, a steel deck bridge from the 1970s gave way to a new span in 2021. Downstream, Postwood Park has a small beach, and it had camping grounds in the middle of the 20th century.
