About the Village of Canton, New York
Canton takes its name from the Chinese city of Canton, known today as Guangzhou. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1801. Their first post office was called New Cairo. By 1807 it had switched to the name Canton, which the village kept.
St. Lawrence University was founded in Canton in 1856. Fifty years later, in 1906, the State University of New York at Canton began just outside the village. Between 1887 and 1889, the village added sewers, water works and electric lights.
