About Lisbon, New York

Lisbon is a town of 4,221 people in St. Lawrence County, and its northern line is the St. Lawrence River, the border with Ontario. French explorers found Iroquoian peoples living along the river. Later the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy held this country as a hunting ground and traded furs with the French colonists who traveled the river.

European-American settlers began arriving around 1789. Several of the early families had come from Lisburn in the north of Ireland, and they named their new town after it. Lisbon was formed in 1801, before St. Lawrence County itself existed, so it became the first town in the county.

  • Hopes pinned on CanadaMacomb and his partners bought into this country expecting upstate New York to prosper on trade with Canada over the river and Lake Ontario. The Embargo Act of 1807 then barred trade with Britain and its Canadian colonies, and the War of 1812 and later limits kept it down. When the Erie Canal opened in 1824, trade and new settlers turned west toward the Great Lakes instead.
  • A Scots-Irish churchLisbon's United Presbyterian Church, now on the National Register, tells who settled the town. Presbyterianism was in effect Scotland's national church, and the congregation here grew from Scots-Irish families who came from Scotland and Ireland.
  • The depot became a museumThe old Lisbon Railroad Depot no longer serves trains. The town now runs it as its museum, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
