About Pittsfield, Maine
Pittsfield is a town of 3,908 people in Somerset County, on the Sebasticook River. Moses Martin and his family came from Norridgewock in 1794 to settle land in the Kennebec Purchase then known as Plymouth Gore. The settlement was organized in 1815 as the Plantation of Sebasticook, and on June 18, 1819, it was incorporated as Warsaw, a name borrowed from the capital of Poland.
In 1824 the town was renamed Pittsfield to honor William Pitts of Boston, who owned a large share of its land. Massachusetts already had a Pittsfield of its own. Local farmers became known for their fine orchards, and the town grew into a trading center for the farms around it.
- Mills at the fallsThe falls of the Sebasticook gave the town water power, so a gristmill and a sawmill went up there, followed by blacksmith shops and a carriage shop. The Penobscot and Kennebec Railroad reached Pittsfield in 1855, and the town grew into a small mill town. Its first woolen mill opened in 1869. The Riverside Woolen Company became the first mill in Maine to sell its cloth straight from the loom to the people who wore it.
- Rebuilt after the 1881 fireFire swept through downtown Pittsfield in 1881, and the town soon rebuilt it. Woodworking plants and a canning factory opened in the years that followed. In 1891 and 1892 the Waverly Woolen Mill went up, and the company also built 52 houses that it rented to its workers. The Sebasticook and Pioneer woolen mills ran here as well.
- From wool to shoes and doorbellsIn 1914 the American Woolen Company bought the Waverly and Pioneer mills, and that business closed in 1934 during the Great Depression. The Pioneer, the biggest of the mills, kept running until after World War II, even as New England's textile trade moved to the South. In the 1940s the Waverly became a shoe factory, and in the 1950s the Pioneer was turned over to making doorbells.
- Home of the Egg FestivalPittsfield holds the Central Maine Egg Festival every year. The town is also home to Maine Central Institute, a boarding school that is partly private and takes in students from beyond the area.
