About Canaan, Maine

Peter Heywood was the first settler, arriving about 1770, and the place was known at first as Heywoodstown. Settlers chose the name Canaan because the land seemed fair and fertile to them, like the land of promise. The town was incorporated in 1788. Skowhegan was part of it until 1823.
