About Pittsfield, New Hampshire
Pittsfield is a town of 4,075 people in Merrimack County, in the Suncook Valley. Several families from Hampton settled here in 1768, when the land was still a nameless parish of Chichester. The founder, John Cram, put up a gristmill and a sawmill beside the Suncook River. In 1782 the town was incorporated and named for William Pitt, the British prime minister who had been a friend to the colonies before the Revolution.
The first meeting house rose in 1789, about midway between Cram's home and his mill, and the path that joined them became Main Street. Taverns opened near the meeting house, and the town center grew up around them. In 1827 the Joy Cotton Mill was built, four brick stories at the foot of Main Street, running on the power of the river's square bend. When the railroad reached Pittsfield in 1869, shoe factories followed.
- Firefighters' gear since 1901Globe Manufacturing started making protective clothing for firefighters in Pittsfield in 1901, and the company still makes it in town today.
- Housing the mill girlsA boarding house went up in 1827 to lodge single women who worked in one of the village's first mills, and it ranks among the oldest of its kind in New Hampshire. Nearby, the 1789 meeting house, much changed over the years, now holds the town offices, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, in the Gothic Revival style, dates from 1863.
- Father of California's schoolsPittsfield was the birthplace of John Swett in 1830. He headed to California in 1853 hoping to find gold, but he became a teacher in San Francisco instead. Later, as the state's superintendent of public instruction, he declared in 1867 that every California public school was now free to every child. He is remembered as the father of the state's public school system.
- 522 pairs of Groucho glassesIn July 2001, 522 people in Pittsfield put on Groucho Marx glasses at the same moment and claimed a Guinness World Record. No town had ever tried for that record before. Since 1981 the Suncook Valley Rotary Hot Air Balloon Rally has filled the first weekend of every August.
