About Plainfield, New Hampshire

Plainfield is a town of 2,459 people in Sullivan County. It lies along the Connecticut River, facing Hartland, Vermont, on the far bank. Its first settlers came from Plainfield, Connecticut, and colonial governor Benning Wentworth incorporated the town in 1761, just as George III began his reign. In the eastern part of town, land called Meriden Parish took its name from a farm owned by Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher, and Kimball Union Academy opened there in 1813.

The town grew around two villages, Plainfield and Meriden, and each kept a town hall of its own. The Plainfield Town Hall went up on Route 12A in 1846, framed with timber saved from an older hall. In Meriden the meeting house burned in 1894, and the hall that replaced it at 110 Main Street is the one building in town that was raised to be a town hall.

  • Maxfield Parrish's 67 yearsIn 1898, at 28, the painter Maxfield Parrish left Philadelphia and bought land near his parents' estate in Plainfield. Over several years he designed and built his home, The Oaks, and later added a studio some distance behind it. He stayed for 67 years, kept painting until he was 91, and died in Plainfield in 1966.
  • A stage set by ParrishIn 1916 the Plainfield Town Hall gained a stage at the back of the building. Parrish designed the set there for The Woodland Princess and decorated its backdrop and wings himself, and they remain one of only three known examples of that kind of work by him.
  • A grange in a union churchThe Blow-Me-Down Grange started out as a church shared by several Congregational groups. Charles Eggleston, a builder from town, raised the brick building in the late 1830s and topped it with a two-stage tower. The Grange chapter was organized in 1894 and purchased the building in 1899. On the upper floor, the stage holds a big painted canvas by Lucia Fairchild Fuller, first created for the Woman's Building at Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
  • Birds on stage for WilsonThe naturalist Ernest Harold Baynes settled in Meriden around 1901 and started the Meriden Bird Club at his home in 1910, the first group of its kind in the nation. In 1914 the club staged Percy MacKaye's Sanctuary: A Bird Masque, with actors dressed as birds and Baynes in the cast, while President Woodrow Wilson watched. Baynes also founded the American Bison Society. He died in 1925, and his ashes were spread over Croydon Mountain.
