About Plaistow, New Hampshire

Plaistow is a town of 7,830 people in Rockingham County, on the Massachusetts line north of Haverhill. Its land was first granted to Haverhill, Massachusetts, in Old Norfolk County. In 1679 King Charles II made New Hampshire a separate province, and the Haverhill land north of the new line went with it.

Massachusetts Bay and New Hampshire argued over their border for years. The quarrel was settled in 1739, and Plaistow was organized as a town in 1749. In 1776 the town gave up its western part, which became Atkinson. No other town outside the United Kingdom shares the name Plaistow.

  • Old Home DayEvery year Plaistow marks its anniversary with Old Home Day. A parade travels Main Street through the village, fireworks go off at the high school, and a carnival fills the lawn of the Town Hall, which was built in 1895.
  • Timberlane since 1966Students from Atkinson, Danville, Plaistow and Sandown once attended several area schools, including Haverhill High School across the state line. Timberlane Regional High School opened in Plaistow in 1966 to serve all four towns, and it still does. Its name honors forestry, a major industry in New Hampshire's economy. A middle school opened beside it in 1975, and a 1999 renovation added the Timberlane Regional Performing Arts Center. Its wrestlers had won 28 state titles as of 2020.
  • A sheriff and judge in VermontDaniel Peaslee, a Plaistow native born in 1773, settled in Washington, Vermont, in 1795. He ran a store and tavern in his new home and became sheriff of Orange County. Though he had no legal training, he later served as the county court's chief judge.
