About Pleasanton, New Mexico

Pleasanton is a community of 97 people in Catron County, in the Williams Valley between Glenwood to the north and Cliff to the south. Mormon settlers founded it in 1882, and for several years the valley was known as a refuge for Mormon men who had more than one wife.

Federal law had turned against plural marriage, so some of these families came to Pleasanton to stay out of reach of the authorities. William Maxwell was one of the polygamists who made a home here for exactly that reason.

  • Jacob Hamblin's last homeThe Mormon leader Jacob Hamblin lived at Milligan's Fort in northern Arizona from 1878, then moved his family to Pleasanton in 1883. His 24th child was born here in 1884. Hamblin caught malarial fever and died in 1886, so the small valley settlement became the final home of one of the best known Mormon pioneers of the Southwest.
  • The 1885 ambushIn 1885 a band of Chiricahua Apache laid a trap for a group of U.S. Army soldiers near Pleasanton. The Apache caught the soldiers in fire from three directions at once and killed them.
  • Settled in 1882Mormons founded Pleasanton in 1882 in the Williams Valley of what is now Catron County. Within a year the settlement had drawn the Hamblin family from Arizona, and for several years it sheltered polygamist families who wanted to live beyond the reach of the law.
