About Glenwood, New Mexico

Glenwood is a community of 113 people in Catron County, near the San Francisco River, on U.S. Route 180, 61 miles northwest of Silver City. Its first house went up in 1878 on the Bush Ranch, a place later called White Water after the creek that flows through it.

Stagecoaches stopped here, and in those years travelers knew the town as Glenwood Springs. The town took the formal name of Glenwood in 1901. New Mexico's first powered airplane flight was made near Glenwood in 1909, and in the 1930s the town felt several mild earthquakes.

  • Silver and gold in 1889In 1889 silver and gold turned up high in the Mogollon Mountains, east of Glenwood above Whitewater Canyon. Mines opened, and wagons carried their ore down to a mill at the canyon's mouth.
  • The Catwalk over Whitewater CreekThe new mining town of Graham needed water to run its electric generators, so a pipeline was laid up the canyon, held to the rock walls by timbers and iron bars that always needed repair. The workmen named it the Catwalk. Today a walking trail follows the old pipeline's route, often a dozen feet or more above the creek, as part of the Gila National Forest's Glenwood Ranger District.
  • Trout and the national forestGlenwood is home to the Glenwood State Trout Hatchery and to the Gila National Forest's Glenwood Ranger Station. The town also keeps the Glenwood Public Library, and its children attend the Reserve Independent School District.
