About Plympton, Massachusetts
Plympton is a town of 2,930 people in Plymouth County, about 35 miles south of Boston. It started out as Plymouth's western parish, and European settlement there dates to 1662. In 1707 it was incorporated as a town of its own and took the name of Plympton in Devon, England.
At first the town was far bigger, covering all of what is now Halifax and Carver plus slivers of Kingston and Middleborough. Halifax broke away in 1734 and Carver followed in 1790, and Plympton's present boundaries were fixed in 1862. Farmers made up most of the early town, and factories later turned out shoes and shovels beside lumber and cotton mills. Today Plympton is mostly rural and residential.
- Deborah Sampson, born 1760Deborah Sampson came into the world in 1760 at her grandparents' Plympton home, a house still standing today. Her mother descended from William Bradford, Plymouth Colony's second governor. As a girl Sampson lived with relatives and neighbors, and from 1770 to 1778 she was bound as an indentured servant to a family in Middleborough. She never went to school there, but the family's sons passed their lessons on to her, and she later taught school herself.
- Soldier Robert ShirtliffDressed as a man and calling herself Robert Shirtliff, Sampson enlisted in the Continental Army. She served 17 months until a fever in Philadelphia in 1783 gave away her secret, and the army discharged her honorably at West Point. In 1802 she toured as a lecturer about her service, among the first women to do so, and on May 23, 1983, Massachusetts proclaimed her the Official Heroine of the Commonwealth.
- A senator born in 1729William Bradford, born in Plympton in 1729, worked as a physician and lawyer before moving to Bristol, Rhode Island. He was Rhode Island's deputy governor during the Revolution, later went to the U.S. Senate, and in 1797 served as its President pro tempore.
- On the shore of Silver LakeThe northern tip of Plympton touches Silver Lake, a 640-acre lake shared with Pembroke and Kingston. The entire Pembroke and Plympton line runs through its water, and the lake feeds the Jones River.
