About North Plymouth, Massachusetts

North Plymouth is a community of 3,983 people within the town of Plymouth, in Plymouth County. It was the home of the Plymouth Cordage Company, which at one time made more rope than any other company in the world and kept its headquarters in a small village here called Cordage Park.

More than 2,000 people worked for the company by the early 1900s, and many of them had come from other countries to take those jobs. The rope works made the company a powerful force in Plymouth's economy. Today the old Cordage Park village holds the Cordage Commerce Center, a large development of offices and stores.

  • A ropewalk 1,025 feet longIn its early years the company twisted its rope inside a covered ropewalk that stretched 1,025 feet. In 1950 a 250-foot piece of the building was given to Mystic Seaport Museum, which still has it on display.
  • 351 homes for its workersThe Plymouth Cordage Company built 351 homes for the people who worked in its mills, including the old Cordage house at 2-4 Spooner Street. Lucille Leary, who led the company's museum as its director, remembered that whole streets took on one heritage, with some Portuguese, some German and some Italian.
  • Rigging for ships everywhereNorth Plymouth rope went onto ships far beyond Massachusetts. People said that vessels came to Plymouth from every point of the compass to be fitted out with new rigging from the Cordage works.
