About Port Chester, New York

The Wappinger people called this land Haseco, meaning marshy land. Colonial settlers named it Saw Pit, after the pits where they sawed logs for building homes. That name first appeared in 1732. The village outgrew it and took the name Port Chester when it incorporated in 1868.

The village was named from a city in England. The word port was put in front of that city's name. It set the village apart from other towns with the same name.
