About Port Ludlow, Washington

The Wilkes Expedition named Port Ludlow in 1841 for Lieutenant Augustus C. Ludlow of the United States Navy, who was killed aboard the Chesapeake in her famous duel with the Shannon. Its Native names were Sna-nul-kwo in the Chimacum language and Dos-la-latl in the Twana, or Skokomish, language.

When Captain W. C. Talbot's party sailed up Puget Sound hunting for a sawmill site, they stopped at Port Ludlow, long known as the best mill site on the Sound. W. P. Sayward and J. R. Thorndike were already hard at work building a mill there, so Talbot's firm went on to Port Gamble.
