About Marrowstone, Washington

Captain George Vancouver of the British Navy discovered and named Marrowstone Point, the northeast tip of the island, on May 8, 1792, noting that its cliff was made mostly of what he called marrow stone. The Wilkes Expedition tried to rename it in 1841 to honor one of its officers, but the change never took. Nordland, the village on the island, was named about 1890 for Peter Nordby, who owned the land there at the time.

Fort Flagler, a coast defense fort at Marrowstone Point on the north end of the island, was built from 1897 to 1900, set in a triangle with Fort Casey and Fort Worden. Army officials named it in 1899 for Brigadier General Daniel Webster Flagler, the Chief of Ordnance when the fort was finished. The fort was abandoned in 1937, used again during and after the Second World War, and later became a state park.
