About Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania
Pottsgrove is a community of 3,471 people in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just northeast of Pottstown. Its best-known landmark began as Sunnybrook Farm, a picnic grove that opened to visitors in 1902.
In 1931 the farm's owner, Ray Hartenstine, set out to give the teens and young adults around Pottstown a place to dance. Crews finished his hall in under eight weeks, and the Sunnybrook Ballroom welcomed its first crowd on Memorial Day 1931.
- The big bands came oftenLouis Armstrong, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and the Dorsey Brothers of Schuylkill County all brought their bands to Sunnybrook, and many returned more than once. Benny Goodman first appeared in June 1935 and kept returning until he had played the ballroom thirteen times. Tommy Dorsey led his band on its stage twenty-four times.
- In Life magazine, 1937When Hal Kemp played Sunnybrook in June 1937, Life magazine covered the night, and the ballroom gained national attention. That same year Hartenstine made the building larger.
- Saved after 2005The ballroom shut down in 2005, and many feared the empty building would be abandoned or torn down. The nonprofit Sunnybrook Foundation stepped in, purchased and repaired it, and opened it again as a hall for special events.
