About Pownal, Vermont

Pownal is a town of 3,258 people in Bennington County, in the far southwestern corner of Vermont, bordered by Massachusetts on the south and by New York on the west. Mahican people lived here in the Woodland period, and the town's southwestern corner once lay inside Rensselaerswyck, the Dutch patroonship centered on Albany. Benning Wentworth, the governor of New Hampshire, chartered the town on January 28, 1760, and named it for Thomas Pownall, who governed Massachusetts Bay.

Families of mostly English descent then moved in from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. New York claimed the same land, so in 1766 a petition from 185 heads of households asked George III to honor their claims, and several men from Pownal signed on with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys. The Revolution split the town between Yankees and Tories, and local men fought on both sides when Burgoyne's army came through. By the end of the war most of the Tories had fled to Canada.

Wikipedia
  • Vermont's oldest houseThe Mooar-Wright House may date from the 1750s, which would make it the oldest house in Pownal and in Vermont. Some credit John Defoe, a Tory jailed in 1776. He escaped, took the British side in the Battle of Bennington, was taken prisoner, broke free a second time and settled in Canada. Others say Charles Wright built it in 1765.
  • Two future presidentsIn 1851 Chester A. Arthur became principal of a boys' academy that prepared students for college, a job that set him on his way to studying law. James A. Garfield, then a student at Williams College, later taught penmanship at the same North Pownal school. Garfield became the 20th president and Arthur the 21st.
  • Mills on the HoosicIn North Pownal a woolen mill replaced an old gristmill in 1849 and ran until it burned in 1863. The Plunkett & Barber Co. built a cotton mill there in 1866. It made cotton until 1930, became a tannery in 1937 and closed in 1988. Lewis Hine photographed Addie Card, a twelve-year-old spinner, on the job in the mill, and the picture later appeared on a U.S. stamp marking the first child labor laws.
  • The first ScoutmasterThe YMCA ran Camp Ilium in Pownal. S. F. Lester came from Troy, New York, and on September 10, 1910, he became the first person to hold the Scoutmaster post approved by the BSA. That year he led 30 scouts to the camp, and scouting in Pownal and Troy began there.
  • Green Mountain Race TrackThe track opened in 1963 and ran thoroughbred and standardbred horse races until 1977, then greyhound races from 1976 to 1992. After the racing ended it hosted a Lollapalooza rock concert in 1996, and from 2005 to 2008 it held antique car shows.
