About Woodford, Vermont
At 2,215 feet, Woodford was the highest village in Vermont in 1937. Belmont and Windham both claimed the title, but they sit lower. The spire of the Woodford Union Church rose closer to the sky than any other steeple in the state.
The rocky mountain land of Woodford was poor for farming, so the town lived on its timber. Its first industry, around 1800, was a forge for bar iron in the Hollow. That forge soon became a furnace that made anchors for ships.
- The first family on the mountainZurial Cutler was the first settler on the hill at Woodford City, about 1820. He built a saw mill, and settlers burned charcoal for the iron furnaces in Bennington. William, son of Andrew and Ann Lyman, was the first boy born on the mountain.
