About Princess Anne, Maryland
Princess Anne is a town of 3,446 people and the seat of Somerset County, the southernmost county in Maryland. It was established in 1733 at the head of the Manokin River, where the river's trade gave the new town its start.
By the middle of the eighteenth century Princess Anne had grown into a market center. Its trade came from the river and from the tobacco plantations around it, where enslaved African Americans grew and processed the crop and did other farm work. Boats could travel up the Manokin as far as the town bridge, and when the Eastern Shore Railroad was extended south, the town's trade grew further. Much of the old town survives, and about 300 structures on about 150 acres form the Princess Anne Historic District on the National Register.
- Named for a king's daughterThe town takes its name from Princess Anne of Great Britain, a daughter of King George II.
- A plan to hide NapoleonAfter the French Empire fell in 1815, Napoleon hoped to escape to the United States. His brother Jerome had married Elizabeth Patterson of Baltimore, and local legend links the Bonapartes to the King family. Hulbert Footner's 1944 book Rivers of the Eastern Shore says Nicholas Girod, a former mayor of New Orleans, planned in 1821 to free Napoleon from Saint Helena and hide him in the Kings' house at Princess Anne. Napoleon died before the plot went ahead.
- University of Maryland Eastern ShorePrincess Anne is home to the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
