About Whitehaven, Maryland
Whitehaven is a community of 46 people in Wicomico County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Maryland's General Assembly authorized the town in the late 17th century, and it ranks among the oldest towns in this part of the state.
The town grew up beside the county ferry, and in the 17th and 18th centuries planters sent Maryland tobacco out from its landing. Through the 19th century it served as a deep water terminal where people came to trade and shop, with stores, a shipyard and a hotel. After the river was dredged up to Salisbury, Whitehaven lost its place as a port and shrank to the small village it is today.
- A ferry still runningWhitehaven began at the site of the county ferry, and the Whitehaven Ferry still carries travelers across the river to Mt. Vernon in Somerset County. It is one of the few public ferries left in Maryland, and a crossing takes about 5 minutes.
- The Whitehaven HotelThe hotel stood in the old port alongside its stores and shipyard, back when Whitehaven was a busy shipping and shopping stop. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the old town around it makes up the Whitehaven Historic District.
