About Prospect, Maine

Work on Fort Knox in Prospect began in 1844. Builders used granite from Mount Waldo in nearby Frankfort. Its purpose was to protect Bangor, a busy lumber port, and its river during the Aroostook War. Work on the massive fort stopped in 1869, before it was ever complete.

In 1859 the United States government was building a massive fort at East Prospect. It was meant to command the whole river above and below. The fort was called Fort Knox in honor of General Knox, a hero of the Revolution.

  • A local treasure huntYears before 1859, many in Prospect believed pirates had buried treasure at a gravel mound called the Cod Lead. It lay near the north line of the town, east of Mosquito Mountain. People dug an immense amount there, but no money ever turned up.
