About Punta Rassa, Florida
In 1866, the International Ocean Telegraph Company set up cable service to Cuba here. An old wooden blockhouse served as its office. The first official news that the U.S.S. Maine had sunk, on February 15, 1898, arrived here. The station closed in 1936, when the cable was extended to Fort Myers.
Punta Rassa was a cattle-shipping point from the late 1830s until the Spanish-American War. Cattle were driven overland to the town and shipped to Cuba by schooner. In 1870, Jacob Summerlin built a 300-foot pier of hewn timbers held with wooden pins. From it he shipped thousands of steers from the Kissimmee River ranges.
- What the name meansPunta Rassa is Spanish for flat point. A military outpost was set up on the site in 1837. It was briefly reopened in 1841 and served as a military post again during the Civil War.
