About Quemado, Texas

Quemado is a community of 162 people in Maverick County, Texas, and the census counts it as a census-designated place. It lies in the Quemado Valley, which farmers began to settle sometime in the late 1800s. P. D. Anderson, one of the valley's landowners, opened the way for many of them by selling off parts of his land.

  • Fleeing a Panhandle droughtThe first farmers to make homes in the Quemado Valley came from the Texas Panhandle. Drought had struck the Panhandle, and in the late 1800s these families left it behind and moved south to the valley.
  • P. D. Anderson's farm tractsOf all the landowners in the Quemado Valley, P. D. Anderson was the earliest to split up his holdings. He cut his property into farm tracts and sold them to the newcomers who were arriving to settle in the valley.
