About Racine, Wisconsin
Racine is a city of 77,816 people and the seat of Racine County, where the Root River flows into Lake Michigan. In November 1674 Father Jacques Marquette and his companions camped at the river's mouth, and they are the first Europeans known to have reached the county. Captain Gilbert Knapp came to the same spot in November 1834. He rode up from Chicago on the Indian trail with William and A. J. Luce, built a rough cabin near the mouth, left his men to guard the claim and went home for the winter.
That winter the planned town was named Port Gilbert in Knapp's honor, and he brought in partners: Gurdon S. Hubbard of Chicago, then J. A. Barker, a Buffalo capitalist, in the spring of 1835. Within a year, hundreds of families from western New York and New England had put up log cabins near his. The name Port Gilbert never caught on, so in 1841 the community incorporated as the village of Racine, from the French word for root, and the new state legislature made it a city in August 1848.
“The first schoolhouse erected at Racine was a structure sixteen feet square, located where McClurg's Block now stands, and the first school was opened by a Mr. Bradley, in the winter of 1836.”
- Wisconsin's first public high schoolRacine High School opened in 1852 as the first public high school in Wisconsin. It taught students until 1926, when the building came down to make room for the Art Deco high-rise of the Racine County Courthouse, and Washington Park High School was built to take its place.
- The rescue of Joshua GloverJoshua Glover had escaped slavery and made a home in Racine when federal marshals arrested him in 1854 and jailed him in Milwaukee. A hundred men from Racine, and in the end 5,000 people from across Wisconsin, gathered, broke into the jail and set him free, and he got away to Canada. The court battles that followed led the state's highest court to strike down the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
- Malted milk in 1887William Horlick, an immigrant from England, invented malted milk in Racine in 1887, and malted milk balls were first developed at the Horlicks factory here. Forty years later, in 1927, Racine architect John Hammes invented the garbage disposal and founded InSinkErator, which still turns out millions of them in the city every year.
- Wright's Johnson Wax headquartersFrank Lloyd Wright designed the headquarters of S. C. Johnson & Son in 1936. Wright, who called Racine a backwater, urged company president Hib Johnson to build somewhere else, but Johnson insisted on Racine. The S.C. Johnson and Son Administration Building and Research Tower is on the National Register, and its tower is one of only 2 Wright high-rises still standing.
