About Sturtevant, Wisconsin

Sturtevant is a village of 6,919 people in Racine County, Wisconsin, and it has gone by four names. The first, Parkersville, honored the Parker family, who were among the early settlers here. Later the place was called Western Union Junction and then Corliss, a name taken from the Brown Corliss Engine Company of Milwaukee.

The present name came in 1923. That year the B. F. Sturtevant Company, a firm from Massachusetts, opened a plant in the village, and the community took the company's name for its own. Today a six-member board and a village president govern Sturtevant.

  • Where two main lines metThe Milwaukee Road, formally the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, had two main lines that met here. The Chicago & Milwaukee line ran north and south, while the Racine & Southwestern Line ran east and west. The Western Union Junction Railroad Museum in Sturtevant keeps that railroad past in view.
  • Soo Line trains after 1985In 1985 the Canadian Pacific Railway bought the Milwaukee Road through its Soo Line subsidiary, and trains kept running on the tracks through Sturtevant. Today the old Southwestern Line runs west only as far as Kansasville.
  • An Amtrak stationPassenger trains still roll through the village. Amtrak's Sturtevant station, on Wisconsin Highway 20 to the north, serves riders from Racine, Kenosha and the suburbs on the south side of Milwaukee.
