About Union Grove, Wisconsin

Union Grove is a village of 4,806 people in Racine County, in southeastern Wisconsin. Governor Henry Dodge gave the place its name. He took the word Union from the name of the local school and added Grove for the burr oaks that stood on the west side of the land, beside what is now Highway 45.

  • A Milwaukee Road stopTrains of the Milwaukee Road, formally the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, served Union Grove on its Racine & Southwestern branch. When the Milwaukee Road went bankrupt in 1980, it gave up the Southwestern Line. CP Rail took over the stretch that runs from Sturtevant through the village to Kansasville.
  • Shepherds College, 2008In 2008 Shepherds College was founded in Union Grove. It offers education beyond high school to students with intellectual disabilities.
  • A Socialist on the farmJames Vint served in the Wisconsin legislature as a Socialist from Milwaukee. He later settled in Union Grove, where he worked an 80-acre farm and managed the Farmers' Cooperative Elevator company.
