About Raoul, Georgia

Raoul is a community of 2,803 people in the southwest corner of Habersham County. It sits right beside the town of Alto. In 1911 the state of Georgia opened a tuberculosis sanatorium here. It stood on a 257-acre tract next to the Southern Railway's main line. The hospital grounds changed over time. Today they hold Lee Arrendale State Prison, which the Georgia Department of Corrections runs in Raoul.

  • Mountain air for the sickThomas Spees Carrington wrote a 1911 book on how to build sanatoriums, and he described this site. It stood about 1,600 feet above sea level, in country with little dust. The air here was said to be clean and fresh all year. A railroad station sat about a quarter mile from the buildings, two miles from Alto.
  • From sanatorium to prisonThe Georgia State Sanatorium opened in 1911 to treat people with tuberculosis. Over the years the complex took on a new purpose. The old hospital grounds are now Lee Arrendale State Prison.
