About Red Creek, New York

Red Creek was first called Jacksonville, in honor of General Jackson, president of the United States. A large creek winds across the village. In places the water has a reddish cast, which gave the creek its name. The village and its post office later took that name too.

Settlers made a permanent home at Red Creek around 1811. They first called the village Jacksonville, in honor of Andrew Jackson. About 1836 the name changed to Red Creek. The new name came from the creek that flows through the whole village.

  • The village's first settlerThe first settler in Red Creek was a man named Bemen, who came in 1809. He built a small hut on the banks of the creek and lived by fishing. The forest held deer, bears, wolves, wildcats and sometimes a panther. Bemen stayed two or three years and then went away.
  • The first lasting settlersNoadiah Childs came to Red Creek in 1811 and built a log house. Jacob Snyder followed with his ten children. Snyder built the first frame house in the village. He was a Methodist preacher and often led local meetings.
