About Redding, California
Redding is a city of 93,611 people and the county seat of Shasta County, on the Sacramento River. During the Gold Rush, miners struck gold on creeks to the north and south, but this ground held so little placer gold that people called it Poverty Flats. In 1868 Benjamin B. Redding, a former Sacramento politician and the Central Pacific Railroad's first land agent, bought land here where the railroad planned to end its northern line.
The tracks reached Poverty Flats in 1872, and the railroad built a town beside its terminus and named it for Redding. In 1874 local legislators renamed it Reading to honor the pioneer Pierson B. Reading, but the old spelling was back by 1880. The city incorporated on October 4, 1887, and the following year it won the county seat away from Shasta.
“Bell's Mansion, erected in 1859 on Clear Creek, was a favorite stopping place for miners on their way to the Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou gold fields.”
- Reading's rancho, 1844Long before the railroad, the Wintu lived here, with as many as 239 villages across the Shasta County area. In 1844 Pierson B. Reading started the first European settlement on Rancho Buena Ventura, a Mexican land grant of 26,632 acres that now holds Redding and Cottonwood. No other settlers from outside lived farther north in California then.
- The dam that doubled the townCopper and iron mines nearby fed Redding's early growth, but the industry faded and the town was struggling by 1920. Work on Shasta Dam, northwest of town, brought it back in the thirties. When the dam was finished in 1945, Redding's population had nearly doubled, and the Whiskeytown and Keswick dams, lumber and tourism kept it growing through the 1950s.
- Enterprise joins for cheap powerIn the 1960s and 1970s Redding annexed land east of the Sacramento River, including the community of Enterprise. Its residents voted for the move mostly to get cheaper electricity from Redding's own city utility, which draws power from Shasta Dam.
- A downtown made overA downtown plan adopted in January 2001 brought the historic Cascade Theatre back to life, and the theatre joined the National Register in 2002. The same plan took the roof off the Midtown Mall, turning it into an open air street for people on foot, and finished a Health Sciences and University Center built in partnership with Shasta College.
