About Retsof, New York

Retsof is a hamlet of 326 people in the town of York, Livingston County, about 30 miles southwest of Rochester. The community grew out of salt mining soon after 1881, and William Foster helped incorporate the Retsof Mining Company in 1885. The name is simply Foster spelled backward, first given to the mine and then to the town.

The mine stayed dry for 110 years and grew into the largest salt mine in North America, with 300 workers in 6,000 acres of chambers 1,000 feet underground. In March 1994 the roof of one chamber caved in, and groundwater began flowing into the salt. Over the next 21 months the cavities collapsed and flooded, and mining stopped in 1995 once the mine was full of water. The drop in the aquifer left many wells dry, and sinkholes as wide as 200 feet damaged buildings and highways.

“At the turn of the century, individual miners, working by candlelight and on a quota system, drilled, picked, hammered, and shovelled salt chunks into mule-drawn carts. The overall daily output was 400 to 600 tons.”
Crooked Lake Review, 1993
  • Second in the nationMore than 20 companies were pumping brine from the ground around here when Foster's Empire Salt Company tried something different. It dug the first dry rock salt mine in New York, only the second in the country, and was soon sending out 400 tons of rock salt every day.
  • A company townMost of the first residents were Italian families, who lived in houses owned by the salt company and shopped at its store, while the company kept up the village. The bosses lived apart on the "Avenue," in better houses that had indoor plumbing.
  • Salt by railThe Genesee & Wyoming Railroad, a short line, carried Retsof's salt to the main lines in nearby towns. The tracks are still in use as a branch of the Rochester & Southern Railroad.
  • Hampton Corners mineAfter the old mine flooded, salt mining moved to the new Hampton Corners mine near Mount Morris, about 10 miles southeast of Retsof.
