About Wadsworth, New York
Wadsworth is a hamlet of 173 people in the town of York, in northwestern Livingston County. For years it was called South Greigsville, because it grew up about three quarters of a mile below the older hamlet of Greigsville. In 1891 a post office opened here under the name Wadsworth, and the hamlet has gone by that name ever since. Its Main Street is New York State Route 36, and Geneseo, the county seat, lies 5 miles to the east.
- Named for a York familyAccording to the Livingston County Historian, the name Wadsworth most likely honors the family of Charles Wadsworth, who lived in the southeastern part of the town of York. The name arrived with the post office in 1891 and replaced the hamlet's older name.
- Greigsville's southern neighborThe old name, South Greigsville, came from the hamlet just to the north. Greigsville took its name from John Greig, who worked as an agent for the land agent Thomas Morris. People sometimes called it North Greigsville to keep it apart from South Greigsville, until the southern hamlet became Wadsworth.
- Draining to the GeneseeThe land around Wadsworth slopes south toward Beards Creek. The creek flows east and empties into the Genesee River.
