About Viola, New York

Viola is a hamlet of 8,208 people in the town of Ramapo, Rockland County. Around 1824 a cluster of trades grew up here. Luke Osborn opened a blacksmith shop, the brothers Theunis and Henry Crum ran a silver plating works, Henry Shuart built wheels and Cornelius Demarest kept a tannery. Mrs. Dominie Demarest, whose household lived on the church parsonage farm here, suggested calling the place Mechanicsville because of those workshops.

By 1829, the year the town adopted the name Ramapo, Mechanicsville was perhaps the largest and most influential village outside the Clove. A post office opened here in 1882, and the village took the name Viola at the suggestion of J. H. Hopper.

  • The county poor farm, 1837In 1837 Rockland County bought the 47-acre parsonage farm of the Kakiat Dutch Reformed Church and opened its Alms House there, 7 miles west of New City, for the poor and for debtors. The county first put up a wooden frame house, and the people living there helped pay their keep by working the farm. A brick building followed in 1883, and the Alms House also ran a school for the children who lived there.
  • A college on the farmIn 1957 the Alms House moved to the Pomona Health Center in Summit Park, and its Viola grounds became the site of Rockland Community College. The college started out in the old almshouse, surrounded by 26.5 acres planted in cabbages and tomatoes, with apple orchards, pumpkins and grapes. The old farm fields are now the campus.
  • Brucker HallThe brick almshouse still stands on campus as an administration building, Daniel T. Brucker Hall. It honors Dan Brucker of Valley Cottage, a Nyack lawyer who was one of the college's founding fathers and vice chairman of the committee behind it. The county's Poor Cemetery, or Potter's Field, and the original Gary Onderdonk Veterans' Cemetery also remain on the grounds.
