About Richgrove, California

Richgrove is a census-designated place of 2,358 people in Tulare County, about 7 miles southwest of Ducor. Two men from the Richgrove Development Company, S. R. Shoup and W. H. Wise, laid out the settlement and named it in 1909. Within three years the new community had a post office, which was listed by 1912.

  • A name for fertile soilShoup and Wise built their town's name on the word rich. California names like that first caught on in the mining days, when they promised gold. They kept their appeal long afterward, but by the time Richgrove was named, they pointed to good farmland rather than gold deposits.
  • Orange groves by 1913The promoters who were building Terra Bella were also developing Richgrove, and they made extensive improvements here. In 1913 the History of Tulare and Kings Counties called Richgrove another rich citrus section south of Ducor, and it reported that many tracts were going into orange groves that spring.
  • 2,358 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 2,358 residents, down from 2,882 in 2010. Younger children go to schools run by the Richgrove Elementary School District, while older students belong to Delano Joint Union High School District.
