About Terra Bella, California

Terra Bella is a community of 2,910 people in Tulare County, about 7 miles south of Porterville and 5 miles north of Ducor. It began as a stop on the Southern Pacific, which laid a branch line from Exeter to Famoso in 1889 and put a station here.

Twenty years later, two hotel men from Los Angeles bought into the land and planned a real town. They gave it streets, a large hotel and a bank, and the railroad station's name became the name of the town.

  • Named for its wildflowersThe railroad named the station in the spring of 1889, when wildflowers carpeted the surrounding country. Terra Bella means beautiful land in Latin or Italian.
  • Laid out in 1909The brothers George A. Hart and D. H. Hart ran hotels in Los Angeles. In 1909 they took an interest in ten thousand acres of Tulare County land, and there they built Terra Bella. They laid out the town and built its streets, and then they raised a large hotel.
  • A bank of its ownThe young town soon had the First National Bank of Terra Bella, and George Hart, one of the brothers who founded the town, served as its president.
