About Richlands, Virginia
Richlands is a town of 5,261 people in Tazewell County, set on the Clinch River just east of the Russell County line. Settlers of European descent reached this valley during the late 18th century, and by 1782 they had a militia outpost here. For more than a century afterward, the place was a farming community.
In 1890 the Clinch Valley Coal & Iron Company began building Richlands into an industrial town. Coal, iron and timber all lay close at hand, so company officials hoped it could become the "Pittsburgh of the South." The stock market crash of 1893 ended that dream, and the company dropped its plans.
- Named for its river landsThe town takes its name from the fertile bottom lands along the Clinch, which settlers called the rich lands. An old county history described the Richlands Valley, at the far western edge of Tazewell, as small in size but one of the busiest and most interesting parts of the county.
- Five men lynched in 1893In February 1893, after some Black railroad workers were accused of robbing and beating a white man, four of them were arrested and held in the town jail. A mob of white residents overpowered the jailer and took the four men out. The mob included James Hurt, a magistrate who sat on the town council, and James Crabtree, a leading businessman. They hanged all four from one tree. A fifth worker was found later and was also lynched.
- A Bruce Hornsby songBruce Hornsby, the Virginia singer and pianist, set his song "The Road Not Taken" in Richlands. It came out on his 1988 album Scenes from the Southside.
