About Amonate, Virginia
Amonate is a coal community of 59 people in Tazewell County, about 8.5 miles northwest of the town of Tazewell. Faraday Coal & Coke founded it in the early 1920s. In 1923 Pocahontas Fuel took over, and Amonate became that company's town, with its houses, road and rail line all built to serve the mine.
“Amonate was one of the very last of the original coal towns from the Golden Age of Appalachian Coal Mining to still have its coal mine.”
- Named for PocahontasThe name Amonate comes from a nickname for Pocahontas. Pocahontas Fuel, the company that ran the town from 1923, also carried her name.
- A camp on Beech ForkThe town grew up in a narrow valley along Beech Fork. The steep land and the needs of the mine decided where it went, and at first a single road and a rail line that followed the creek were its only ways in and out.
- On the census in 2020For about a century Amonate went uncounted as a place of its own. The Census Bureau first listed it as a census-designated place in 2020 and counted 59 people.
