About Tazewell, Virginia
Tazewell is a town of 4,486 people and the seat of Tazewell County. It grew up near the headwaters of the Clinch River. At the end of the 19th century the county's population rose quickly during a coal and iron boom, as the Pocahontas Coalfields were worked.
- Jeffersonville until 1892The town was first known as Jeffersonville. In 1892 it changed its name to Tazewell, matching the name of its county and honoring Senator Henry Tazewell.
- A five-cent streetcarBy one account, Tazewell ranks among the smallest American towns ever to run a streetcar. The Tazewell Railway and Light Company started it in 1892 as a horsecar, carrying riders from the train station and the industrial works in North Tazewell to the government buildings, hotels, restaurants and shops along Main Street. The line was electrified in 1904, and a ride cost five cents. By 1920 automobiles were taking its riders, and the streetcar shut down in 1933.
- The Back of the DragonBetween Hungry Mother State Park and Tazewell, Virginia State Highway 16 runs for 32 miles through the mountains, and locals call this part of the road the Back of the Dragon. It climbs and drops through hundreds of sharp turns, and motorcyclists and sports car drivers come to ride it.
