Abbs Valley took its name from Absalom Looney, a hunter. The valley was about 10 miles long and only 40 rods wide. The tract had no stream and was bounded by lofty mountains. Its soil was of extraordinary fertility.
James Moore of Augusta County and James Poage settled in Abbs Valley. In September 1784, a party of Shawnee raiders came into the valley. They captured the son of Captain James Moore and carried him off. The boy remained a prisoner for three years.
- The first surveyors in the valleyColonel James Patton brought the first exploring and surveying party west of the New River in 1748. In 1750 and 1753 he had surveying done in Abb's Valley. His work prepared the way for the settlers of Tazewell County.
