About Richmond Heights, Florida

Richmond Heights is a community of 8,944 people in Miami-Dade County, about 16 miles southwest of downtown Miami. Early in World War II the Navy bought 2,500 acres here from the Richmond Timber Company, a big supplier of Dade County pine, and built an airship base it named for the lumber company. Naval Air Station Richmond grew into the second largest blimp base in the country, but a hurricane and fire destroyed it in September 1945.

After the war, Frank Crawford Martin, a captain who flew for Pan American Airlines and had once studied at West Point, bought 3,000 acres beside the old base. By the end of the decade he had laid out a planned neighborhood there for Black veterans and their families, and every one of its first residents had served in World War II.

“Richmond Heights was the first private development in Miami-Dade County established for African American veterans and one of the first planned Black communities in the United States.”

  • Blimps over the Florida StraitsAt its peak, 3,000 men served at the Navy base next door, which had three hangars and 25 K-series blimps. Each hangar stood 16 stories tall, framed in Douglas fir that arrived by train. The blimps watched over ship convoys in the Florida Straits, and the station directed the hunt for U-boats in the Caribbean.
  • The 26 pioneer housesMartin's first 26 houses went up for Black veterans of World War II while Miami-Dade County was growing quickly in size and population. In 2019 the state announced that they had been placed on the National Register together as the Richmond Heights Pioneer Historic District, the first community of its kind in South Florida.
  • A Historic Weekend each yearEvery year people travel back to Miami-Dade County for the Historic Weekend, a celebration of Richmond Heights hosted by the local Historic Society.
