About Ridgecrest, Florida

Ridgecrest is a community of 2,966 people in Pinellas County, just southwest of Largo. Much of its early growth came from two families who bought land here and then helped other families settle on it and own their homes.

When Chester Gooden and his wife Corrine left Ocala in 1936, Chester was 30, and Largo was mostly empty land. The couple bought 10 acres. As more families arrived from other parts of Florida and from Georgia and Alabama, the Goodens sold them parcels of that land, and the newcomers became homeowners.

  • A church on Gooden landIn 1944 the Goodens gave part of their land for a church, St. Mary's Missionary Baptist, the first one in the area. Over the years the couple also opened several businesses around the Greater Ridgecrest area.
  • Gooden Crossing in 2003In February 2003, two years after Chester died, the Pinellas County Commission renamed Basking Crossing Road as Gooden Crossing to honor him and Corrine.
  • Dansville, named for Dan HenryIn the early 1920s Dan Henry left Dawson, Georgia, and came here along with the family of Lloyd, his brother. By 1946 he owned two 40-acre tracts. He built a house for his own family there and then invited other African American families to settle. The 68-acre neighborhood took his name and grew into a close, self-reliant community of about 80 houses, with Mt. Olive Baptist Church and a store.
