About Rimini, Montana

Rimini sits on Tenmile Creek in Lewis and Clark County, about 13 miles west of Helena, with Red Mountain to the east and Lee Mountain to the west. Prospectors found silver lodes here in 1864, and in 1867 John Caplice staked a claim he named the Lee Mountain Mine. Most of the miners who followed him were Irish, so the camp was first known as Young Ireland.

In 1883 residents asked Governor Schuyler Crosby for a post office. He told them postal officials disliked two-word names, so Young Ireland would not do. Crosby had just seen a play about Francesca da Rimini, and he proposed Rimini instead. The post office accepted it, and the name became official in 1884. In 2020 the census found 51 residents.

  • The railroad came in 1885Little ore left the district until the Northern Pacific built a branch line to Rimini in 1885. Mines opened through the 1880s, among them the Eureka, the Lady Washington, the East Pacific, the Porphery Dike and the John McGraw, and some reached 500 or 600 feet down. The Lee Mountain alone produced more than $1.5 million. By 1891 the district was sending 400 tons of ore a week, most of it to the smelter at Wickes.
  • About 300 people in 1890Rimini reached its peak around 1890. Its roughly 300 residents had several hotels, stores and boarding houses, a school, a church, a sawmill, a livery stable and a doctor's office, along with saloons, gambling houses and pool halls. Mining went on through the 1920s, but little was done after the early 1930s.
  • Sled dogs for World War IIIn 1942 the U.S. Army opened a War Dog Reception and Training Center at Rimini. Its sled dogs were meant to help the 10th Mountain Division in a planned invasion of Norway. When the Army dropped that plan, Camp Rimini trained dogsled teams for search and rescue work in the Arctic, serving the Air Transport Command. Under the Quartermaster Corps, the camp prepared 263 sled dogs and 268 pack dogs by 1944.
  • Cleaning up Tenmile CreekThe old mines left waste in the creek that supplies about 50 percent of Helena's water. The EPA put the Upper Tenmile Creek Mining Area on the Superfund list on October 22, 1999, and the village lies inside it. In 2011 crews dug out the main road and hauled about 18,000 cubic yards of waste from one mile of Rimini Road. They cleaned nearly every yard in town and added new septic systems.
